From sleep trackers to heart bands, this year’s CES saw a range of companies unveiling their latest health & fitness tech. But as this week’s final Chart of the Day suggests, the health and fitness revolution hasn’t taken off as quickly as some may have expected.

It’s currently just 15% of internet users who are using health and fitness apps each month – only a fractional increase on the figures seen a couple of years ago. Uptake of smartwatches and smart wristbands is likely to be having a considerable impact here. While the availability of low-end wearables in many APAC countries is boosting health & fitness app usage to the 25%+ mark there, smartwatches and wristbands have yet to move beyond their niche status in many mature markets.

Of course, the arrival and refinement of the new Apple Watch this year could help to push up ownership figures. But until wearables overcome their challenges, health & fitness apps are unlikely to crack the mainstream.
